Behind the Lens: Why SILMO Paris Matters to alt*ego

Performance first. Expression always.

At alt*ego, eyewear has never been simply an accessory.

Whether we are developing sunglasses for cycling, performance eyewear for active lifestyles or ski goggles designed for the mountains, every product has to balance two things: how it performs and how it makes you feel when you put it on.

That is why we are heading to SILMO Paris 2026, one of the world's leading international trade shows for the optics and eyewear industry.

What is SILMO Paris?

Held annually in Paris, SILMO brings together the global eyewear and optical industry under one roof - from independent eyewear designers and international brands to lens specialists, manufacturers, technology companies and innovators.

The 2026 edition takes place at Paris Nord Villepinte from 25–28 September and brings together around 1,500 brands from 42 countries across 75,000 square metres of exhibition space.

For us, however, the important part is not the scale. It is the opportunity to look closely at where eyewear is going next.

Looking beyond the frame

Building an independent eyewear brand means constantly asking questions.

Can a lens perform better?

Can a frame be lighter or more comfortable?

Which materials and technologies are emerging?

How is performance eyewear evolving?

And how can technical eyewear become something people are genuinely excited to wear?

SILMO gives us the opportunity to explore those questions alongside the people developing the next generation of eyewear.

It is a chance to meet manufacturers and specialists, investigate new lens technologies, study materials and construction, and understand the developments that could influence future alt*ego collections.

Performance first

Our designs may sparkle, shimmer and make a statement, but performance has always come first.

Behind every alt*ego product is a process of considering lenses, protection, fit, comfort, materials and the environment in which that piece of eyewear will ultimately be worn.

Trade events such as SILMO allow us to continue learning, questioning and developing.

We can explore advances in lenses and materials, speak directly with specialists and manufacturers and understand how innovation across the wider optical industry could translate into better products for our customers.

Sometimes that may lead to something you eventually see in an alt*ego collection.

Sometimes it simply gives us greater knowledge to challenge a supplier, refine a specification or decide that a particular development is not right for us.

Both are equally valuable.

Expression always

Technical development is only half of the alt*ego equation.

Eyewear is also one of the most immediate forms of self-expression.

Put on a pair of sunglasses or goggles and you can instantly change how you look - and, perhaps more importantly, how you feel.

Interestingly, that idea is increasingly visible across the wider eyewear industry too. For 2026, the SILMO Trends Forum explores eyewear through individuality, colour, materials, distinctive silhouettes and a growing intersection between sport, technology and style.

For alt*ego, those worlds have never been separate.

We believe performance products can be playful. Technical eyewear can be glamorous. Sports equipment does not have to disappear into the background.

Sometimes it should do exactly the opposite.

Independent, but never in isolation

As an independent British eyewear brand, we deliberately do things differently.

We do not want to follow every trend or replicate what the biggest brands are doing. Our job is to build a distinctive alt*ego universe of our own.

But being independent does not mean developing in isolation.

It means staying curious.

It means understanding what is happening across the international eyewear industry, building relationships with experts and suppliers, discovering new technologies and then deciding which developments genuinely deserve a place in our world.

That is part of the responsibility of creating performance eyewear.

What are we looking for at SILMO Paris 2026?

We will be heading to Paris with a particular eye on performance lens technology, sports eyewear, new materials, manufacturing developments, emerging frame shapes and the continuing crossover between technical eyewear and fashion.

We will also be watching what happens when innovation becomes more expressive.

Because that intersection - where technical performance meets personality - is exactly where alt*ego likes to be.

And, as always, we will be asking one simple question:

Could this make the next alt*ego product better?

Follow @altego_uk as we take you behind the scenes at SILMO Paris and share some of the ideas, innovations and eyewear trends that catch our eye.

Performance first. Expression always.
